Some fun things to do at Chapman Forest:

Visiting Chapman Forest

We hope you will visit Chapman Forest to experience tranquility, awaken to the markedly diverse habitats, or contemplate the role of human habitation stretching to pre-colonial times. As you walk down the cedar tree lined, unpaved entrance road, you are stepping back in time to ~1840. As you slowly approach Mt. Aventine, the antebellum manor house of the historically important Chapman Family, be sure to look for the eagles that soar above year round. As you circle around the house, you will surely linger over the remarkable view of the Potomac River. On a clear day, you can even see the tip of the Washington Monunument! Single file hikes on footpaths through the forest can lead you to endangered plants and animals, old growth forest, spawning territories, and other treasures.

AdmissionAdmission to Chapman Forest is free, but donation are greatly appreciated. Donations maybe put in the donation box inside the Mt Aventine house or mailed in to the Chapman Forest Foundation Treasurer.
When to ComeChapman Forest changes with the seasons, so come often! We have public events which you may attend or you can come on your own whenever you like during sunlight hours. If the vehicle gate is closed, just park (not blocking gate) and walk right in through the pedestrian entrance. Our public events schedule is on our calendar.
FacilitiesThere is a portable restroom by the entrance road near the Mt Aventine house. There is no potable water available on site, so please bring plenty of your own water.
Leave No TraceAs with all Maryland State Parks, Chapman Forest is a trash-free area. The information board at the entrance gate has small trash bags for you to use if you forget your own. Please plan on taking everything you brought in with you. In addition, please leave all plants, animals, and everything else at Chapman Forest here for future visitors. You are perfectly welcome to take home photos and wonderful memories.
